Biography
PALERMO, MAINE—Elberton H. Glidden, 86, died of natural causes on Monday, January 30, 2012. He was born in Palermo, Maine on August 12, 1925, the son of the late Howard and Beatrice (Worthing) Glidden.
Elberton attended school in Palermo and was a graduate of Erskine Academy, where he met his wife, Helen (Higgins) Glidden. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946, stationed in Germany during World War II.
During his teen years, he was employed by Dinsmore’s Store as a clerk. Later he worked for Martin Electric in Augusta, Maine. In 1967 he began working for Westinghouse in Augusta, Maine and retired in 1991.
Elberton was born and raised in Palermo, Maine. He was a member of the Branch Mills Grange, and was an avid gardener and card player. He loved his Boston Red Sox and also enjoyed spending time at camp and raising his bees.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his daughter, Kathaleen Glidden Saban.
Elberton is survived by his wife, Helen of Palermo, Maine; three sons, Arthur Glidden and his wife, Ramona of Montville, Maine, Carroll Glidden and his wife, Mary of Searsmont, Maine, and Elden Glidden and his wife, Patricia of Palermo, Maine; two brothers, Atwood Glidden of Palermo, Maine and Sherwood Glidden and his wife, Betty of Weeks Mills, Maine; a sister, Roberta Tobey and her husband, Kempton of China, Maine; a daughter-in-law, Darlene Glidden and her special friend, Chris of Pittston, Maine; a son-in-law, Oscar Saban of Palermo, Maine; grandchildren, Loretta Glidden of Augusta, Maine, Holly Glidden Kaloustian and her husband, Paul of Rockport, Maine, Michelle Glidden of Palermo, Maine, Jamie Glidden of Raleigh, North Carolina, Arthur Glidden, Jr. of Belfast, Maine, Amanda Saban of Winterport, Maine, Joanna Glidden of Belfast, Maine, Joshua Saban of Waterville, Maine, James Glidden of Searsmont, Maine, Angie Glidden Barrows of Northport, Maine, and Tina Skidgell Hollis and her husband, Larry of Virginia; several great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Elberton was a great spirit and will be sadly missed by all.
Visiting hours will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 3 at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home-Gray Chapel, 207 Windsor Neck Road, Windsor, Maine. A graveside service will take place in the spring at Smith Cemetery in Palermo, Maine.
