BENTON, MAINE—Hazel Marion Spaulding, 94, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 28, 2013, at Oak Grove Center in Waterville, Maine, with Harry Vayo playing a dulcimer. She was born on November 23, 1918, the sixth child of eight children to Aaron W. and Ida Mae (Witham) Rood. Hazel attended school in East Benton, Maine and worked at Hassen Drug Store in Fairfield, Maine. She later worked at Lipman Poultry and retired from Ralston Purina as a floor lady after 24 years of employment. In October 1937, she married Norman B. Norton and they had two daughters, Sharon and Marita. Norman passed away on January 12, 1963, after a little over 25 years of marriage at their West St., Fairfield, Maine, home. In July 1966, she married Basil Orcutt and enjoyed almost 25 years of marriage together with him and his two daughters, Thelma and Paula. He passed away on January 26, 1991. On April 9, 1994, she married Daniel Spaulding and enjoyed 14 years of marriage with him and his children, LeBaron, Theodora, and Mary Jane at their home on the Augusta Rd., Winslow, Maine. Dan passed away on December 30, 2007. Hazel enjoyed the family reunions with the Braggs, Dixons, Roods, and Wades, time spent with her special nieces and nephews and their families, time at Swans Island, Maine with Basil’s family, and the Spaulding get-togethers with Daniel’s family and friends. Any spare time was spent playing cards, dancing, dining out, enjoying her clubs and church friends, and most of all time spent with the grandchildren, great grandchildren, and her newest great great grandchildren, so proud of each one. She attended and was a member of Fairfield First Baptist Church, was a 50 year member of Goodwill Rebecca Lodge #50 of Fairfield, Maine, and was honored to be a life member of the Benton Grange where she attended for about 67 years. Hazel was also active with the Fairfield Senior Citizens and Clinton Senior Citizens. She was the final survivor of her siblings, being predeceased by her grandparents; parents; husbands; brothers, Robert Rood and wife Elvira, Ernest Rood, and Frank Rood and wife Doris; her sisters, Emma Dixon and husband Ole, Hester Wade and husband Warren “Babe”, Hilda Gower and husband Robert, and Thelma Bragg and husband Carl; and her daughter, Marita Sinclair Murray. Hazel is survived by her daughter, Sharon R. Norton; step children, Thelma Gagne and husband Bernard, Paula Orcutt, LeBaron Spaulding and wife Betty, Theodora Chaykowski and husband Jim of Tennessee, and Mary Jane Hunt and husband Royden of Island Falls, Maine; grandchildren, Sharon’s daughter, Gretchen M. Fletcher-Lytle and husband Phillip Jr. of Eliot, Maine, Marita’s children, Rhonda Huff and husband Kris of Orrington, Maine, and Douglas Sinclair Jr. of Hermon, Maine; 11 step grandchildren; great grandchildren, Nicholas Huff and wife Chelsea of Hampden, Maine, Kristen Huff of Portland, Maine, Chelsea Sinclair, serving with the U.S. Army, Meaghan Sinclair of Bangor, Maine, Kayleigh Lytle of Eliot, Maine, Ryan Fletcher TSC, Beals Air Force Base, California, Aaron M., Kaitlyn B., and Jason P. Fletcher all of Eliot, Maine; 14 step great grandchildren; great great grandchildren, Jayden and Dakota; many nieces and nephews and their families; church, grange, Rebecca, and Senior Citizen friends; and special life long friend, Gladys Benner and her family. Special thanks go to all of her caregivers at Maine General Medical Center-Thayer Campus, Oak Grove Center, Health Reach Hospice of Waterville, Maine, Dr. John Burke and Dr. Clifton Smith, and all the friends who visited. A funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February, 2 at Fairfield First Baptist Church, 12 Newhall St, Fairfield, Maine with Pastor Stephen Donahue officiating.
